Special District Information Program
The Special District Information Program is a vital component of Florida's Local Government Financial Reporting System. The program serves many customers by coordinating intergovernmental activities, promoting accountability, and providing technical assistance as it relates to Florida's 1,600-plus special districts. Primarily, it is a state special district clearinghouse that:
- Administers the Uniform Special District Accountability Act of 1989 (Chapter 189, Florida Statutes)
- Provides technical assistance to special districts, municipalities, counties, state agencies, the public, and professional organizations regarding the general requirements of special districts. Resources include the Florida Special District Handbook Online, written for special district staff and governing board members, and an annual special district conference cosponsored with the Florida Association of Special Districts;
- Improves special district accountability by monitoring important financial report filings, assisting state agencies and local governments in collecting delinquent reports, and helping special districts produce reports that have been delinquent;
- Promotes governmental efficiency by continually reviewing and disseminating information about special districts and updating the Official List of Special Districts Online, a "one-stop shop" source of information about special districts. State agencies and all municipalities and counties must use information produced by this online database to help them coordinate and compile financial information and comply with various state and local reporting requirements.
